At the end of each beginner course or on additional dates we have an open Kyu exam. The current Kyu examination regulations of the German Kendo Federation can be found here (as of 2023). The results of kyu exams are documented in the kendo passport, which must be available before the exam. A fee of €10.00 is charged for the Kyu exam. Please make sure that you have a current visual mark in your kendo passport (if available). If you are a member of the Tekkeikan and do not yet have a valid kendo pass for the current year, please contact Armin directly.

In addition to competition and training with the shinai, kendo also includes kata, in which a wooden sword (bokuto) is used. The kata are techniques that are performed by two people without armour according to a set sequence. The first four forms concentrate on attack initiation techniques, while the last five focus on techniques for reacting to an attack. The Kihon Kendo Kata appears in the examinations up to 3rd Kyu.
In Nihon Kendo Kata, the teacher always moves first. Both the student and the teacher use a bokuto. In the first seven kata, both sides use a tachi, a long bokuto. In the last three kata, the teacher uses a tachi and the student a kodachi, a shorter bokuto.
